Just about to begin assembly of a V3 kit. Received the Hangar 9 sealing iron and Seam Grip.
    WOW!!!
Intimidating….that’s a lot of assembly moves!
Is there anyone in Victoria that has assembled the V3 kit, or any of the DIY rafts, that I might speak to regarding this process?

    Tanks!

I will go straight for that when I’m  testing, just a little worried that the perfect position will be over the floor/tube joint. But will take that on as it comes, otherwise I guess you could leave a flap from that joint and trim it as an attachment later. But for a first build it might be to tricky for my skill and risk of being th…[Read more]

I hear you, and that was my hunch; my concern is that it is hard to get the right tool at a “consumer” price point (if at all), and it seems that most (all?) of the recommended irons are a gamble on their quality; Matt has had some positive experiences with a couple off-the-shelf irons, but it seems like others experiences are all over the board.

Looking at the site you’ve linked to, he pretty much admits that the problems are down to poor workmanship and poor tools. The photo shows a seam that will not only leak but quite possibly tear apart under serious stress. The situation is much the same as with anything else you might make, be it tent, shed or packraft: you need to have the right…[Read more]

Figuring out the attachment and balance for the fat bike.  The raft fits easily in the seat bag.  paddles on the handle bars.  I still had to wear a back pack for the PFD.  Next purchase will be an inflatable one.

(Yep, the zipper is on up side down.  It seemed OK when it was all apart.  Next time…)

A couple laps of the lake,…[Read more]

Here is an easy option for the top off tube.

I made this one out of scrap raft material.  I used a 1/2 inch dowel covered in parchment paper. Melted the seam, turned it inside out, then put a thin strip over the seam.  It works well, won’t put stress on the valve, and is easy to stash when not in use.

I haven’t found a readily-available glue that is as strong as a heat welded joint, so instead of gluing the attachment loop to the non-TPU side of the fabric, I would simply cut a hole in the tube and patch it with a piece of scrap so the TPU is on the inside there – then you can attach a loop to the TPU there.

I recently became interested in packrafting, after reading a number of trip reports to some really beautiful, remote locations. I love the concept of diy packraft because I like working with my hands, learning, and saving some cash. Thanks to all for the documentation on this site!

    Thanks!

I will defently add it after its finished. One downside of it will be that it kind off get in the way of stored gear but i guess it wont be that much of a downside if its located towards the front. I also have to be aware of not interfearing with the tube-floor joint with the bottom attachment (or do an attachment loop upon putting it…[Read more]

    Hi Gustav,

I think that is a very interesting idea, and it could work quite well if made in the way you described. I would first build the packraft and then make the rod holder afterwards, both so you can decide exactly where you want it, and also because after making the packraft you will have a very good understanding of what is possible and…[Read more]

    Hi!

Just order my first kit and eager to start. Since 9/10 times I use my packraft a Rod Holder is high on the wish list of modification.

Most types I have seen are external, as for example “the packraft table”.

I was thinking of making an internal rod holder, similar to this:

To do that on an inflatable my plan is to make a “sock” of nylon…[Read more]

Hi. Andrew here. Interested in packrafting, and I like working with my hands, since my work is entirely working with my brain. Plus I always think I can make something better (for me) than what is commercially available, even though I am frequently proven wrong.
