How To

Back Band Assembly Instructions

I’m excited to announce that all the standard weight single-person DIY Packraft kits (Skeena, Telkwa, Atlin, etc.) now include parts for making a back band. Compared to a simple backrest cushion, a back band moves your seating position forward to better balance the packraft, and it also helps you sit Read more…

How To

Backband Attach Point How-To

Reclining against a packraft’s rear tubes is comfortable, but for whitewater paddling you’ll want to sit in a more forward and upright position. A backband makes that possible. This new video shows how to make and install attachment points for a backband out of fabric and a couple of ladder Read more…

How To

Slotted Attachment Point Video

I use this type of attachment point to secure the thigh straps to my packrafts, and because they’re low profile and only weigh 3 grams (0.1 oz), they’re a good option for securing things to your spray deck, behind your backrest, and in many other areas.

Announcement

Thigh Straps Available Now

After many iterations, I’ve come up with a thigh strap design that works well, is comfortable, and has an installed weight of only 130 grams (4.6 ounces) including the attachment points. From now on, a set of thigh straps will be included with every Skeena, Atlin, and Telkwa kit. If Read more…

Video: The Fabrics

I made this video to show the current fabrics that I use to make the Ultralight and the standard weight DIY Packraft kits. In the video, I talk about some of their properties and show how durable they are. If you want to test the fabrics yourself, you can do Read more…

New Heat Sealing Video

As part of my effort to continuously improve the DIY Packraft instructions, I’ve made a new, more comprehensive video about heat sealing. It’s pretty long, but it’s everything you need to know, all in one place, and my hope is that even experienced DIY Packraft builders will learn something useful Read more…

Packraft Trip Video

It’s snowing outside here now and all the lakes and rivers are frozen, so editing this vlog-style video was a nice change of scenery for me. It’s footage from a solo packrafting trip I did last August in Nanika-Kidprice Provincial Park, which is one of the many huge back-country parks Read more…

My Month-Long Packrafting Trip

Packraft Camping Video

There are lots of packrafting videos online, but most of them focus on the paddling and don’t show much of the hiking and camping part. I prefer videos that have a bit of a story to them, so I decided to try making one myself. I just walked out my Read more…

Video: Intro to DIY Packraft

It’s been a couple of years since I made an introductory video for DIY Packraft, so I thought it was time to make a new one. I don’t really know where to post it, so for now it goes here.

Convert a Kayak Paddle to a Packraft Paddle & Trekking Pole

Note: I’m not recommending that you buy an expensive carbon paddle and then cut it up to make a packrafting paddle – if you’re purchasing a new paddle then you can probably find a 4-piece paddle that suits your budget – but if you already own a 2-piece paddle, or Read more…
