The long seams were tricky trying to reach inside those tubes. If I remember right, my floor is 84″ long. I’d say think it through before you proceed so you are sure you’ll be able to effectively seal those long seams from the extended tubes. I had some persistent leaks there that I finally sorted out.
Don’t mess with the 3m stuff, I just us…[Read more]

Hey Derek,
Great build. I’m actually just starting on building my own plus-size voyageur, but even larger to accommodate two kids (about 100″ long).
Any other general tips you want to share? It sounds like sealing that inside tube seam during construction might be a good approach. I have loads of Aquaseal but none of the 3M stuff you…[Read more]

Bruce replied to the topic Pure TPU as adhesive in the forum DIY Packrafts 7 years, 9 months ago
I tried several different heat sealing tapes. Bonds to the PU coating was unsatisfactory so I gave up. I was also unable to determine if the film of tape chemically matched the TPU coating. My understanding is that plastic welding and bonding only works between two identical or compatible plastics.

Great to know the Big Agnes fits my Voyager. An interesting complaint packrafters made about using their camping pads for the floor of their packraft was sleeping on a wet pad. A solution is to put the pad under the tent floor!

I’m fascinated with your successful application of 3m 5200. I bought the slow sure version and had no luck getting it to cure. Great looking craft, love the photos!

Bruce replied to the topic What is recommended pressure? in the forum DIY Packrafts 7 years, 9 months ago
Marcin, Yes, packraft inflation is limited to lung pressure, at or less than one psi. In contrast, I believe a full size NRS 18′ heavy duty raft is inflated to 2.5 psi, much higher pressure than any packraft should be inflated.
It is an interesting question, and I have just acquired a low pressure gauge to fit my NRS barrel pump so I can pressure…[Read more]

Here’s a video showing how I make tie-downs for the outside of the packraft. Written instructions with downloadable patterns are posted here.
The video shows how I attach them to an existing packraft – if […]

Hi.
Maybe it’s stupid question (because everybody knows answer), but I have to ask. What is pressure inside packraft chamber?I found only information about mouth inflation – does it mean that internal pressur not exceed 40-45mbar (0,6 psi)?

eswets replied to the topic DIY packraft vest – sub 200g in the forum DIY Packrafts 7 years, 9 months ago
- I estimate the air volume to ca 5-6 liters, so around 50-60N boyancy. The straps are sewn on to a piece of 1000D tpu, sandwiched between the 210D main tpu fabric.
I am on holiday now, but I can find the plans when I come home.

Hi
I have two qustions, maybe three:
– What is buyonancy of that vest? Did you test is?
– How straps attached? Glues or sewed?
– Have you got any drawing? Plans?
Right now I try to make something similar. Have to reduce places in rucksack, and two standard PFD take about 10 liters of volume.

Haha – sounds like fun!
Thanks for the tip about the 3M 5200 – I picked some up and I’m testing it now. I couldn’t find the quick-cure version locally, so it’ll be a few days before I can really pull on it. It seems like it might be a good product for coating the inside of the seams during construction to prevent those annoying pinhole leaks that…[Read more]

Well, 1 yr later (I know I’m slow!) I had my v2 out on the water today for it’s maiden voyage….wow and whew. All the hard work paid off when I got on the water and realized this thing is legit. My friend has an Alpacka I had been drooling over for a few years and he was pretty impressed with the look and how it paddled through the water.
It was…[Read more]

Paddles fine, and outside of my craftsmanship, I’m totally happy with it. I didn’t foresee how difficult the inside tube seam would be when I made the floor length 16″ longer and had difficulty with those seams being airtight. So….3M 5200 to the rescue. Works fine now.
I sit with my knees slightly bent and feel I can navigate easy rivers fi…[Read more]
