Hi Joe,
It looks like you’ll need
- 1 m of 1000D
- 2 m of 210D for the tubes
- 3 m 210D for the inflatable floor insert (you could use less, but then you’d have to patch together multiple pieces for the top and bottom, which would be difficult to make airtight)
- At least four drain valves (front and back, left and right, placed near the seat…

Hi Naas, I can’t see any reason why that wouldn’t work, so if you give it a go please let us know how you like it compared to the regular method.
Cheers!

Hi Naas, I tried using TPU tape and couldn’t get it to form a strong bond with the fabric so I gave up on the idea, but if you figure out a method that works, please let us know!

Another excellent idea out of Fairbanks! Thanks, Bruce, and keep ’em coming!
I’ll add this to the how-to page so more people will see it.

Hello again Matt.
I’m ready to get a kit and thought I’d ask about specific lengths of material here, in case anyone else is interested in expanding the Voyageur. I’ll explain what we’re after so you can guide us to exactly how much extra material. The plan is to make an interior length of 100 inches, or 37 inches longer than the standard 63 inch…[Read more]

I was thinking of using 420d double sided fabric for the first 5 cm of the seam strips. This way it would be possible to just follow the fabric of the side tubes for bonding to the floor and avoiding the sharp bend (these are in my opinion the weakest points in the packrafts) in the seam strips. This would however only be possible to do by using…[Read more]

I think it should be possible to substitute the aquaseal/seamgrip with pure TPU. If it works, i thing this might be a more elegant solution. There are many options available:
Tape…[Read more]

It is easy to add tabs to tie-in your seat when installing the V3 reinforcing strips. Small tabs made from 420D or 1000D two-sided fabric can be ironed in between the reinforcing strip and the tube section.

Punch holes in the tab, I used a leather punch, and short pieces of parachute cord to tie in your seat. (I punch matching holes in my seat,…[Read more]

Bruce replied to the topic Necessity of the Top-Up-Valve? in the forum DIY Packrafts 7 years, 11 months ago
The Boston Valve’s one-way middle partition is excellent. I use 1/2″ ID x 5/8″ OD tubing with a couple -three layers of duck tape around it to get a seal inside the middle valve. (7/8″ is for the larger opening when using my inflation bag.) I don’t want to snag the longer top-up tube attached to a top-up valve and have it pop apart. Especially if…[Read more]

This is just a quick post to let you know that the 210D camouflage fabric is now in stock, so that means there’s nothing left on backorder. Now it’s just a matter of catching up on the orders that were placed on […]

Just finished my first build, waiting on the glue to dry on the last leaky seam and then it’s headed to the river to test out!

The site definitely seems faster to me. So far so good.

Excellent – sounds good!
One thing to note is that the higher up the center of gravity is, the less stable the boat will be and the lower the sides will seem. It should still be really stable (because it’s so wide), but just be careful with the little ones 🙂

Hi,
My name is Johan and I’ve recently bought my first packraft from Matt. I’m from Sweden, right now living in Stockholm but born and raised in the south of Sweden and this fall ought to move up north.
Cheers, JW

I borrowed this book from my local library and I liked it quite a bit, so I thought I’d post a review here in case you’re looking for a paddling book. I might make book reviews an occasional feature of the blog, […]

Thanks Matt! Really appreciate the reply, even if you don’t have a definitive length for me. I think confirming that 1 paddler could handle a long boat is helpful. If anything it seems the longer boat will fare better on the mellow lakes and rivers we’ll use (your “Tracking, or Directional Stability” article makes that point with regard to…[Read more]
