Took my DIY packraft out for its first outing on Lake Taupo (New Zealand) last week.

Great, thanks for the feedback… Maybe a soldering Iron with a DIY tip and a regulator is the way to go then. I see extremetextile.de are operating with weldling temperatures on their garments. Strange if your producer don’t have any statements about this?

Hi Josh – I would definitely choose the seat, as it raises you up into a more comfortable paddling position. Without a seat, you have to lift your arms up quite high, which feels a bit awkward and would be tiring after a while. Slowly working away on mine, it’s been a slow process of laying out baffle placements on both pieces of fabric so they will line up, sizing out baffles, etc. I know due to the curve at the bow and stern I’ll probably have some wrinkles but we’ll see how it looks when I finish. Someday.

I have used a similar sealing iron (I built my first packraft with one – you can see it in my older videos) and it works fine for sealing, but the ironing surface is too wide for most purposes so it is a bit slow because you have to use the tip or the edge of the iron instead of the flat surface.

I have my hot plate set at about 244C or 470F. I have no way to test the exact temp other than the adjusting knob’s markings. I have my home made irons on the hot plate preheated.
