I bought the Trim Sealing Iron Q-Model 606-1 in the first instance. I did not work. The iron simply does not produce enough heat. It was advertised for kite and rc plane decals. Probably it is good for these – for packrafting isn’t.

If you are living in the EU then extremetextil.de might be a good choice.
I first wanted to purchase a complete ultralight kit, but after I did the math I didn’t… Why? In the EU we must pay VAT + customs tax above 150 Euro value. In many western countries the package most likely will not pass the customs. In the Netherlands the amount of tax is…[Read more]

I have been using the same overnight backpack for… 19 years! I had to think about that. It’s a Gregory, about 70 litres, and it’s very comfortable. It weighs a lot though – maybe 3 kg? I have noticed some ultralight backpacks on the market recently, and I wonder if any of you have experience with them. Are they comfortable? Are they worth the…[Read more]

Hi Larry,
Never fear! Where there is a will, there is a way.
You might be able to re-heat the ends with your iron and coax them apart while they’re hot. If this just makes a mess of things, leave them as-is and you can glue the end of the seam fabric to the outside of the floor. In Step 3 you will add some glue to the inside of this area anyway…[Read more]

Have you found other sources of materials for making packrafts, like TPU-coated fabric and inflation valves? Maybe you are overseas and the shipping is cheaper from a supplier close to you. Tell us about it, and please review the quality – especially if you have compared it to the stuff I offer.
Of course I want people to purchase things from the…[Read more]

I just started assembling my packraft. (I really know how to have fun on a Friday night!)
I was so excited to get everything all lined up perfectly that I accidentally forgot the rule “2 cm left unsealed at each end of tube-floor joint (for now).”
So a couple of tube ends are sealed. Is this going to really mess things up down the road? How can…[Read more]
