Finished my packraft last weekend, and took it out for the first time on the Hutt River (NZ) yesterday. It all went great! Still a couple small leaks to sort out and need to put some tie points on.
Question for you Matt – do you have any recommendations for UV protection? When I was in SAR we used 303…[Read more]

This is an excellent tip! I had just assumed it would be too difficult to turn the tubes inside out so I didn’t even try it. I’ll give it a go on my next build though!
Thanks

In this case I would heat seal them in place as best as possible and add Aquaseal where necessary, and then reinforce the joint with an additional strip of fabric heat sealed on the outside of tube-floor joint.

Turn it inside out.
I tacked the 3 tube down using the cardboard tunnel, then turned the entire tube inside out and finished the seam. I found this a lot easier than trying to chase bubbles and inspect the seam looking through the tunnel. I thought I had a good seam until I looked it in the daylight and saw all the flaws.
With minimal o…[Read more]

I damage the TPU on one of my tubes where it is supposed to attach to the floor, can I use aqua seal to bound this piece where the TPU is damaged?

Hi Jordan,
That sounds like an epic adventure, and that’s the type of trip packrafts are made for! I’d use single-person packrafts with airtight zippers for internal storage… However, I strongly urge you to gain lots of moving-water experience and take a swift-water rescue course before venturing out on a remote, multi-day river trip. There’s…[Read more]

In this case, I think I would heat seal them in place as best as possible and add Aquaseal where necessary, and then reinforce the joint with an additional strip of fabric heat sealed on the outside of the packraft (overlapping the joint between the tube and the floor). I’d add the reinforcing strip after the seam strips were in place joining the…[Read more]

Hi,
I am planning a trip for this summer to raft the Vitim river in Siberia with a friend. We both have very little experience with kayaks but between us a ton of experience in other extreme outdoor sports, certified wilderness first aide, etc. Basically very comfortable outdoors and in extreme conditions…new to rafting.
We plan to do a two…[Read more]

So I got maybe a third of the way through sealing one of the 4-sections to the floor of my raft when I realized that I had used a 4R instead of 4L. Luckily I was able to pull it off but the TPU on the section pulled off of the fabric and remained stuck to the floor. My plan to to rectify this is to use aquaseal to adhere the section in the areas…[Read more]
