How Much Fabric Do I Need?

If your question is not answered here already, please post a comment below.

The following recommendations are based on these assumptions:

  1. You will make your packraft with the TPU side of the fabric on the outside of the tubes. If you want to make your packraft with the TPU coating on the inside of the tubes, more fabric may be required.
  2. You purchase fabric from the DIY Packraft shop. Fabrics from other suppliers may not be as wide, so confirm the usable width before ordering. (Note that the usable width is less than the total width, due to the frayed and uncoated edges, called the “selvage.”)
  3. You will make your packraft with 3 cm of overlap between the floor and the tubes. (If you want significantly more overlap, you may need to order extra fabric.)

Fabric required:

  • For a Small packraft with a single-layer floor, 5 m of fabric is sufficient.
  • For a Small packraft with a double-layer floor, 6 m of fabric is sufficient.
  • For a Small packraft with 40D tubes and a 210D floor, you will need 4 m of 40D and 2 m of 210D fabric.
  • For a Small packraft with seams and floor a different colour from the tubes, you will need 4 m of the tube colour and 2 m of the seam/floor colour. This will be enough for either a single or double-layer floor.

  • For a Medium packraft with a single-layer floor, 5 m is sufficient.
  • For a Medium packraft with a double-layer floor, 6 m is sufficient.
  • For a Medium packraft with 40D tubes and a 210D floor, you will need 4 m of 40D and 2 m of 210D.
  • For a Medium packraft with seams and floor a different colour from the tubes, you will need 4 m of the tube colour and 2 m of the seam/floor colour. This will be enough for either a single or double-layer floor.
  • For a Medium packraft with a black double floor, and red, blue, and yellow tubes,

  • For a Large packraft with a single-layer floor, 5 m is sufficient.
  • For a Large packraft with a double-layer floor, 6 m is sufficient.
  • For a Large packraft with 40D tubes and a 210D floor, you will need 4 m of 40D and 2 m of 210D.
  • For a Large packraft with seams and floor a different colour from the tubes, you will need 4 m of the tube colour and 2 m of the seam/floor colour. This will be enough for either a single or double-layer floor.

  • For a standard length Voyageur 2-person packraft with a single layer floor, all one colour, 7 m of fabric is required
  • For a standard length Voyageur 2-person packraft with a double layer floor, all one colour, 8 m of fabric is required
  • For a standard length Voyageur 2-person packraft with a single layer floor, with the floor a different colour than the tubes, (seams same colour as floor) you will need 3 m of the floor colour and 5 m of the tube colour (6 m of tube colour if you want the seams to match the tubes).
  • For a standard length Voyageur 2-person packraft with a double layer floor, with the floor a different colour than the tubes, and the seams the same colour as the floor, you will need 4 m of the floor colour and 5 m of the tube colour.
  • If you want to extend the length of the Voyageur 2-person packraft, you will need more fabric for the floor and side tubes.

Don’t forget your seat!

  • For a Seat without a back rest, you will need 1 m of fabric (there will be about 0.5 m left over – enough for baffles for an inflatable floor or another small project such as a back rest).

Spray deck:

  • Small – 1 m
  • Medium – 1 m
  • Large – 2 m

Spray skirt: 1 m

  1. How much fabric would I need to make two medium sized rafts with 40d tubes and 210d floors + two 40d seats?
