You can probably save a few dollars by buying a new plug instead of an adapter, but other than that, there’s no benefit. When I made the video the only adapter I could find was about $30, which seemed excessive, but since then I’ve seen them as low as $8, which makes that option more attractive.

I’ve been working on an article about how to evaluate different packrafts when you’re shopping around online. It started out as a blog post, but it ended up being quite long and detailed (over 4000 words!), and I […]

For the “V4” boats with the hourglass shaped seat/seat back, I find that a single “Type 2” attachment point (on the Tie-Downs & Attachment Points page) works well at the rear of the cockpit floor. I tie a length of cord through the attachment point and around the neck of the seat.

Thanks for posting this, Derek! We can all be glad that it ended well (more or less) and we can learn from the experience – but man, what a scare! I’m so glad you’re all okay.
Just yesterday I was thinking that maybe I should write a post or make a video about cold weather packrafting, and you’ve spurred me into action. For now, here’s a related…[Read more]

Hi Arnold – interesting! I probably won’t offer something like this because people come in so many different shapes and sizes it would be a tremendous amount of work, but I think it would be reasonably easy to make a set of lightweight waders using your old ones as a pattern. I’d approach it by purchasing a meter or two of fabric in the weight you…[Read more]

Matt (Admin) replied to the topic Skeena/Telkwa review wanted re: handling and comparison to other boats in the forum DIY Packrafts 5 years, 5 months ago
Hi Robin,
The Skeena and Telkwa models are so new that probably only a handful of people have finished building theirs, and I’m not sure how many of them have paddled the other packrafts you’re interested in, so it might be a while before you get a useful review. In the meantime, I started writing some notes about things to consider and what to…[Read more]

Hi Sean, I’ve found that the TPU to non-TPU welds aren’t very strong, and with all the rolling and unrolling a packraft goes through, it probably won’t hold forever, so I’d put some Seam Grip (or similar) around the edges so if it does separate there at least it won’t leak. The seam sealing glue isn’t great as a structural adhesive either, though.…[Read more]

Thanks, Reed. Please let me know if it gets worse.
The 190 GSM fabric might be okay, but its tear strength is a lot lower than that of the 250 GSM fabric, so it probably depends on how you’ll use it. I haven’t tried it myself, so I can’t really advise you on that. -

I haven’t experienced this, but I’m curious if you added reinforcing strips to the TPU side of the baffle-to-seat welds – I’ve always done that, but I can see how it might peel over time if you didn’t. I’m also curious if it’s happening at the ends of the baffles (close to the side of the seat) or somewhere in the middle. When you make your…[Read more]

Matt (Admin) replied to the topic urgent help – fixing mistake v3 in the forum DIY Packrafts 5 years, 5 months ago
Don’t worry – this is not a huge problem! If you can’t un-seal one side by reheating it and peeling it up, and then redo it (which you probably can’t), then I would cut a slit in the floor fabric perpendicular to the edge, long enough so that the fold disappears. Then simply cover the slit with patches – one on the bottom of the packraft’s floor…[Read more]
