Matt (Admin)KeymasterI was thinking of something along the same lines, but all the roll-top drybags I’ve owned aren’t airtight – they keep water out, but if you sit on them they slowly deflate – so I was thinking of a closure more like the slide-on clips found on hydration bags (Camelback, etc.). I don’t know how to make one of those though, and it would have to be quite long to be useful (at least 50 cm), so I put the idea aside. Maybe someone else can think of a better solution though.
Cheers!
Matt (Admin)KeymasterDone.
Matt (Admin)KeymasterHi Josh,
Sure, I’ll try to get that done today. You can see a couple pictures of it in a packraft here, but I’ll take some pictures of just the seat as well.
Cheers,
Matt
Matt (Admin)KeymasterHi John,
The heat-sealed bonds are actually stronger than the fabric itself (you can see this demonstrated in the fabric comparison video), so reinforcing the seams by sewing or adding wider strips over them would not increase the durability of the packraft overall unless you reinforce the tube fabric as well. You could do this by adding an extra layer of fabric anywhere that you are concerned will wear or tear (e.g. the floor or the lower/outer part of the tubes).
Cheers,
Matt
Matt (Admin)KeymasterThanks for the excellent pictures and the review! This is useful information for everybody. I’m glad you had a successful journey 😀
Matt (Admin)KeymasterBeauty!! Thanks for posting, and thanks for the tip about the Neo Air Xlite!
Matt (Admin)KeymasterNope, they’re different – TPU is heat sealable, while PU is not. You can read more about them on the Fabrics page. Cheers!
Matt (Admin)KeymasterPlease check the How Much Fabric Do I Need? page 🙂
Matt (Admin)KeymasterThanks for posting your pictures and comments – your packraft looks great! Excellent work 😀
Matt (Admin)KeymasterCheck out this cool time-lapse video Quincy made of himself constructing his DIY Packraft from plans and uncut fabric! Thanks, Quincy!
Matt (Admin)KeymasterHere’s Jeb T’s all-camo DIY Packraft – thanks for sending pictures, Jeb!

Matt (Admin)KeymasterCool training wheels idea! It deserves some thought.
Matt (Admin)KeymasterCool – let us know how it goes!
Matt (Admin)KeymasterThanks for posting, Adrian! I can’t make it this year, but maybe next year 😀

Matt (Admin)KeymasterCheck out these pictures of an ingenious cruiser spray deck made by Andreas H.! He used 40D ripstop and a YKK Aquaguard 3C zipper. It tucks away into that tiny bag on the bow and weighs barely anything. I love getting emails like this!

Matt (Admin)KeymasterThat sounds reasonable – do let us know how it goes 🙂
Matt (Admin)KeymasterNice work, Lyn! I know how much time and effort goes in to prototyping, so well done! My only comment is that handling might be improved if the gear storage area is in the bow instead of the stern, as I’ve noticed that with a pack or passenger up front there’s less yaw induced with each paddle stroke (because of the increased “moment of inertia” and because more of the boat’s length is below waterline).
I’ll be very curious to see how it turns out and hear your thoughts after you’ve had a chance to paddle it. Thanks for posting!
Matt (Admin)KeymasterWow, good work, Chris! I wondered what that connection looked like inside, but didn’t have a screw driver long enough to take it apart. Thanks for posting!
